# Ralph Hamilton

**Ralph Albert Hamilton** (June 10, 1921 – June 5, 1983[1]) was an American professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) player. He played for the [Fort Wayne Pistons](/source/Fort_Wayne_Pistons) and [Indianapolis Jets](/source/Indianapolis_Jets) of the [National Basketball League](/source/National_Basketball_League_(United_States))[2] and the [Basketball Association of America](/source/Basketball_Association_of_America) (BAA), precursors to the modern day [National Basketball Association](/source/National_Basketball_Association) (NBA).[3] Hamilton was traded by the Pistons to the Jets in December 1948.[3]

Hamilton, a native of [Fort Wayne](/source/Fort_Wayne,_Indiana), [Indiana](/source/Indiana), played collegiately at [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University) in [Bloomington](/source/Bloomington,_Indiana).[4] He played for the [Hoosiers](/source/Indiana_Hoosiers_men's_basketball) in 1941–42 and 1942–43 (his [sophomore](/source/Sophomore_year) and [junior](/source/Junior_(education_year)) years, respectively) but then served in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) for three years during the end of [World War II](/source/World_War_II).[4][5] When he came back as a 25-year-old [senior](/source/Senior_(education)) in 1946–47, he served as team captain and led them in scoring, was named First Team All-[Big Ten Conference](/source/Big_Ten_Conference) and was dubbed a [consensus First Team All-American](/source/1947_NCAA_Men's_Basketball_All-Americans).[4] He also scored nearly 1,000 points during his staggered college career.[4]

Hamilton died in 1983[6] just shy of his 62nd birthday.
