**Ralph Earle Jr.** (January 17, 1908 – May 23, 1995) was an American [biblical](/source/Bible) scholar.[1]

## Early life and education

He was born in [Dighton, Massachusetts](/source/Dighton,_Massachusetts).[citation needed] Earle completed his [undergraduate](/source/Undergraduate) work and earned a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) from [Eastern Nazarene College](/source/Eastern_Nazarene_College) before earning his [Master's degree](/source/Master's_degree) from [Boston University](/source/Boston_University). He completed [B.D.](/source/Bachelor_of_Divinity) and [Th.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Theology) programs at [Gordon Divinity School](/source/Gordon_Divinity_School) before pursuing [postdoctoral](/source/Postdoctoral) studies at [Edinburgh University](/source/Edinburgh_University) in [Scotland](/source/Scotland), [Episcopal Theological School](/source/Episcopal_Theological_School), and [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University). He also held an honorary [D.D.](/source/D.D.) from Eastern Nazarene.[2]

## Career

He authored and edited many scholarly articles and books, including several [Bible commentaries](/source/List_of_Biblical_commentaries). He served as a pastor in [Woonsocket, Rhode Island](/source/Woonsocket,_Rhode_Island) and [Everett, Massachusetts](/source/Everett,_Massachusetts) while on [faculty](/source/Faculty_(university)) at [alma mater](/source/Alma_mater) [Eastern Nazarene College](/source/Eastern_Nazarene_College) in [Quincy, Massachusetts](/source/Quincy,_Massachusetts), from 1933 to 1945. He was an ordained minister in the [Church of the Nazarene](/source/Church_of_the_Nazarene).[citation needed]

Earle was founding Professor of New Testament at [Nazarene Theological Seminary](/source/Nazarene_Theological_Seminary) in [Kansas City, Missouri](/source/Kansas_City,_Missouri) from 1945 to 1977 and served on the Committee on Bible Translation for the [New International Version](/source/New_International_Version) of the [Bible](/source/Bible).[3][4][5] Earle joined the [Evangelical Theological Society](/source/Evangelical_Theological_Society) as a charter member in 1950, served on the executive committee from 1958 to 1966, and was president in 1962.

## Death

Earle died on May 23, 1995, eleven days after suffering a stroke.[6]
