He attended Harcourt Butler higher secondary school. From 1951 and 1954, he attended the [Delhi School of Architecture](/source/School_of_Planning_and_Architecture%2C_Delhi) in [New Delhi](/source/New_Delhi). After completing a degree in architecture in New Delhi, he moved to [London](/source/London) in 1955 where he lived until 1961.
