# Rahel Romahn

**Rahel Romahn** (born c. 1993)[1] is a Kurdish-Iraqi born Australian actor.[1]

## Early life

Born in [Kurdistan](/source/Kurdistan), in Northern Iraq, Romahn's family fled [Saddam Hussein’s](/source/Saddam_Hussein) regime when he was three, initially hiding in Turkey for a year, then emigrating to Australia, where he grew up in [Parramatta](/source/Parramatta), in western Sydney.[2]

Despite having to adjust to a new language and culture, Rohman was performing in school productions by grade three, playing [Fagin](/source/Fagin) in *[Oliver Twist](/source/Oliver_Twist)* and [Hook](/source/Captain_Hook) in *[Peter Pan](/source/Peter_Pan_(play_and_novel))*.[3] Romahn describes himself as "an oddball recluse who loved to mimic people and accents."[4] After watching [Al Pacino](/source/Al_Pacino) in *[Scarface](/source/Scarface_(1983_film))*, he was inspired to express himself creatively. He got further into acting, after hearing a radio advertisement for a local drama school when he was 13, and took screen acting workshops in Sydney.

After Romahn finished high school, he worked in customer service for a leading Australian bank, while honing his acting skills at home after hours. Stage and screen appearances followed.[2]

## Career

Romahn initially scored a small role in *[Underbelly](/source/Underbelly_(TV_series))* in 2010. From there he starred in his breakthrough role in [SBS](/source/SBS_(Australian_TV_channel)) miniseries *[The Principal](/source/The_Principal_(TV_series))*.

Other roles he has played include the TV series *[Shantaram](/source/Shantaram_(TV_series))* and *[Mr Inbetween](/source/Mr_Inbetween)*, miniseries *[Australian Gangster](/source/Australian_Gangster)* and films *[Little Monsters](/source/Little_Monsters_(2019_film))*, *[Ali's Wedding](/source/Ali's_Wedding)*, *[Down Under](/source/Down_Under_(2016_film))*[5] and *[Alex & Eve](/source/Alex_%26_Eve)*.[6]

He has also appeared in a number of stage roles, most recently as [Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart) (opposite [Michael Sheen](/source/Michael_Sheen) as [Antonio Salieri](/source/Antonio_Salieri)) in *[Amadeus](/source/Amadeus_(play))* at the [Sydney Opera House](/source/Sydney_Opera_House) in 2023.[7]

For his performance in *[The Principal](/source/The_Principal_(TV_series))*, Romahn was nominated for the 2016 [AACTA Award for Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a Television Drama](/source/AACTA_Award_for_Best_Guest_or_Supporting_Actor_in_a_Television_Drama)[8] and the 2016 [Logie Award for Most Outstanding Newcomer](/source/Logie_Award_for_Most_Outstanding_Newcomer).[9] In 2022, he was also the winner of the annual [Heath Ledger Scholarship](/source/Australians_in_Film), selected from a field of more than 600 candidates.[2][10]

## Personal life
