Since the 1970s, Queen has sold 300 million records worldwide, making them one of the [best-selling artists in history](/source/List_of_best-selling_music_artists).<ref>{{cite web |date=2012-03-23 |title=The biggest selling UK acts of all time |url=https://www.nme.com/photos/the-biggest-selling-uk-acts-of-all-time-1437412 |access-date=2022-06-20 |website=NME |language=en-GB}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last=Thompson |first=Simon |title=Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Is Officially The World's Most-Streamed Song |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/simonthompson/2018/12/10/queens-bohemian-rhapsody-is-officially-the-worlds-most-streamed-song/ |access-date=2022-06-20 |website=Forbes |language=en}}</ref> ''[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine))'' ranked them as the 87th Greatest Artist of All Time.<ref>{{Cite magazine |date=2019-11-14 |title=Greatest of All Time Artists |url=https://www.billboard.com/charts/greatest-of-all-time-artists/ |access-date=2022-06-20 |magazine=Billboard |language=en-US}}</ref> According to [RIAA](/source/RIAA), Queen has sold 108.7 million certified records in the US.<ref>{{cite web |title=Gold & Platinum |url=https://www.riaa.com/gold-platinum/ |access-date=2022-06-20 |website=RIAA |language=en-US}}</ref>

Founded in 1970, Queen released their [self-titled debut album](/source/Queen_(Queen_album)) in 1973. Despite not being an immediate success, they quickly gained popularity in Britain with their second album ''[Queen II](/source/Queen_II)'' in 1974.<ref name="allmusic-bio">{{cite web|url={{AllMusic|class=artist|id=p5205/biography|pure_url=yes}}|title=Queen Biogrewine|first1=Steven|last1=Thomas|website=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic)|access-date=1 August 2009}}</ref> Their 1975 single, "[Bohemian Rhapsody](/source/Bohemian_Rhapsody)", was No. 1 in the [UK](/source/UK) charts for nine weeks (and a further five weeks in 1991 after Mercury's death) and is the third-biggest-selling single of all time in the UK.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.everyhit.co.uk/record4.html |title=All Time Best Selling Singles (UK) |publisher=EveryHit.com |access-date=3 December 2011}}</ref> In the US, "Bohemian Rhapsody" hit the [''Billboard'' Top 40](/source/Billboard_Top_40) charts in three different decades, reaching No. 9 on its original release in 1975, No. 2 in 1992 after being featured in the film ''[Wayne's World](/source/Wayne's_World_(film))'', and hitting the Top 40 once more in 2018 upon the release of the Queen biopic ''[Bohemian Rhapsody](/source/Bohemian_Rhapsody_(film))''. The 1981 compilation ''[Greatest Hits](/source/Greatest_Hits_(Queen_album))'' is the biggest-selling album in UK history, with 6 million copies sold by 2014. The 1991 compilation ''[Greatest Hits II](/source/Greatest_Hits_II_(Queen_album))'' is also one of the UK's top ten biggest-sellers of all time, with 3.8 million copies sold by 2012.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/adeles-21-is-now-the-uks-sixth-biggest-selling-album-of-all-time-1214/ |title=Adele overtakes Dire Straits to become UK's sixth biggest selling album of all-time |website=[OfficialCharts.com](/source/OfficialCharts.com) |date=23 March 2012 |access-date=21 April 2012}}</ref>

In 1972, Queen signed a production deal with [Trident Studios](/source/Trident_Studios).<ref name="qz">{{cite web|url=http://www.queenzone.com/queenzone/bio_view.aspx?q=4|title=Queenzone|access-date=15 February 2007|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20061123032115/http://www.queenzone.com/queenzone/bio_view.aspx?q=4|archive-date=23 November 2006|df=dmy-all}}</ref> Later in their career, Queen signed a record contract with [EMI](/source/EMI_Records), and [Elektra](/source/Elektra_Records) in the United States. The band would remain with EMI for the rest of their career, although in 1983 they terminated their American contract with Elektra and signed with [Capitol Records](/source/Capitol_Records). However, in 1990, they terminated their US contract with Capitol and signed with [Disney](/source/Disney_Music_Group)'s [Hollywood Records](/source/Hollywood_Records),<ref>{{cite news|title=Queen Signs With Disney, Raising Hope For Cd Releases|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/1990/09/13/queen-signs-with-disney-raising-hope-for-cd-releases/|access-date=17 July 2014|work=Chicago Tribune|date=13 September 1990}}</ref> which has remained the current recorded-music rights owner and distributor of Queen's entire music catalogue in the US and Canada.<ref>{{cite news|last1=Wilker|first1=Deborah|title=Queen Must Decide On Replacing Freddie Mercury|url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/1992/05/07/queen-must-decide-on-replacing-freddie-mercury/|access-date=17 July 2014|work=Sun-Sentinel|date=7 May 1992}}</ref>

In 1991, Hollywood Records paid tribute to Queen's 20th anniversary and remastered their entire catalogue and released all albums up to ''[The Miracle](/source/The_Miracle_(album))'' on compact disc in the US. Each album contains at least one bonus track.

Subsequently, 14 albums (all studio albums up to ''The Miracle'', as well as ''[Live Killers](/source/Live_Killers)'' and ''Greatest Hits'') were remastered at [Abbey Road Studios](/source/Abbey_Road_Studios) and released on CD and [cassette](/source/Compact_Cassette) in the United Kingdom between July 1993 and March 1994. Queen's entire album back catalog was remastered and re-released in the UK and the rest of the world (excluding the US) through 2011 to commemorate their 40th anniversary (as well as being the 20th anniversary of Mercury's death). The 2011 remasters were released by [Universal](/source/Universal_Music_Group)'s [Island Records](/source/Island_Records) label, as the band's contract with EMI ended in 2010,<ref>{{cite magazine|last1=Collett-White|first1=Mike|title=Queen Signs To Universal, Preps Remastered Albums|url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/951467/queen-signs-to-universal-preps-remastered-albums|access-date=17 July 2014|magazine=Billboard|date=8 November 2010}}</ref> and then on [SACD](/source/Super_Audio_CD) by Universal Music Japan, between November 2011 and April 2012. In an interview with BBC Wales, Brian May announced a new compilation album titled ''[Queen Forever](/source/Queen_Forever)'', which was later released by Hollywood Records in November 2014.<ref name="queenforever">[http://www.brianmay.com/brian/briannews/briannewsmay14.html#34 Brian May - BBC Wales Interview] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150330063417/http://brianmay.com/brian/briannews/briannewsmay14.html#34 |date=30 March 2015 }}, Retrieved 24 May 2014.</ref>

In 2012, Queen were ranked as the [seventh-biggest-selling singles artist in United Kingdom](/source/List_of_best-selling_music_artists_in_the_United_Kingdom_in_singles_sales), with 12.6 million singles sold.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-official-singles-charts-biggest-selling-artists-of-all-time-revealed-1431/|title=The Official Singles Charts' biggest selling artists of all time revealed!|last=Lauren|first=Kreisler|publisher=[Official Charts Company](/source/Official_Charts_Company)|date=4 June 2012|access-date=12 January 2021|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120609103357/http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-official-singles-charts-biggest-selling-artists-of-all-time-revealed-1431/|archive-date=9 June 2012}}</ref> In a time period stretching from 1991 up to October 1995, Queen sold five million copies in Italy alone.<ref>{{cite news|title=Disco dei Queen Disco dei Queen Mother Love è l'ultimo Mercury|newspaper=[La Stampa](/source/La_Stampa)|page=20|date=7 October 1995|url=http://www.archiviolastampa.it/component/option,com_lastampa/task,search/mod,libera/action,viewer/Itemid,3/page,20/articleid,0678_01_1995_0272_0020_9170794/|quote=Incredibile anche la popolarità in Italia: dal 1991 ad oggi, i «Queen» hanno venduto oltre 5 milioni di copie|language=it|access-date=24 February 2021}}</ref>
