Quarter florin minted in London, 1344.

The **quarter florin**, **half leopard** or **helm** was an attempt by [English](/source/England) [King Edward III](/source/Edward_III_of_England) to produce a gold coinage suitable for use in Europe as well as in England (see also [double leopard](/source/Florin_(English_coin)) and [leopard](/source/Leopard_(coin))).[1] The Helm, based on contemporary European [gold coins](/source/Gold_coin) had a value of [one shilling and sixpence](/source/Pounds%2C_shillings_and_pence) (3⁄40 [pound sterling](/source/Pound_sterling)). However, the gold used to strike the coins was overvalued, resulting in the coins being unacceptable to the public, and the coins were withdrawn after only seven months in circulation, and eventually demonetised in August 1344, to be melted down to produce the more popular [gold Noble](/source/Noble_(English_coin)).

The obverse of the coin shows the royal [helmet](/source/Helmet_(heraldry)) surmounted by a [cap of maintenance](/source/Cap_of_maintenance) and a [leopard](/source/Leopard_(heraldry)); the legend is EDWR R ANGL Z FRANC D HIB (Edward [King of England](/source/King_of_England) [and France](/source/English_claims_to_the_French_throne), [Lord of Ireland](/source/Lord_of_Ireland)). The reverse of the coin shows a [floriated cross](/source/Cross_fleury) with a [quatrefoil](/source/Quatrefoil) in the centre; the legend is EXALTABITUR IN GLORIA ("He shall be exalted in glory", [Psalm 112](/source/Psalm_112):9).

In 2015, an example was found in [Colyton, Devon](/source/Colyton%2C_Devon).[2] It was sold for £50,000.[3]
