**Qeydar** ([Persian](/source/Persian_language): قيدار)[a] is a city in the [Central District](/source/Central_District_(Khodabandeh_County)) of [Khodabandeh County](/source/Khodabandeh_County), [Zanjan](/source/Zanjan_province) province, [Iran](/source/Iran), serving as capital of both the county and the district.[5][6]

## Etymology

Main articles: [Qedar](/source/Qedar_(person)) and [Qedarites](/source/Qedarites)

The city is named after the biblical figure [Qedar](/source/Qedar_(person)), who was the progenitor of the [Qedarite](/source/Qedarites) tribal confederation of North Arabia and the son of [Ishmael](/source/Ishmael). Qedar is revered in the Islamic traditions as an ancestor of the Islamic prophet [Muhammad](/source/Muhammad). The [Shi'ite](/source/Shi'ite) sect of Islam (which is predominant in Iran) believes that Qedar was a prophet.[7]

Other names for the city stemming from the same source include Geydār, Geydār Palnamnār, Ghaidar, Ghaidar Paighambar, Kedar, Keydar, Keydar-Peygambar, and Qidār Peyghāmbar.[4][b]
