Species of lichen

Pyxine lilacina Scientific classification Kingdom: Fungi Division: Ascomycota Class: Lecanoromycetes Order: Caliciales Family: Caliciaceae Genus: Pyxine Species: P. lilacina Binomial name Pyxine lilacina Swinscow & Krog (1975)

***Pyxine lilacina*** is a rare species of [saxicolous](/source/Saxicolous_lichen) (rock-dwelling), [foliose lichen](/source/Foliose_lichen) in the family [Caliciaceae](/source/Caliciaceae). Found in East Africa, it was [scientifically described](/source/Species_description) as a new species in 1975 by lichenologists Dougal Swinscow and [Hildur Krog](/source/Hildur_Krog).[1] The lichen has a brownish-grey to [lilac](/source/Lilac_(color))-grey [thallus](/source/Thallus) that is tightly appressed to its substrate. The [lobes](/source/Glossary_of_lichen_terms#lobes) comprising the thallus are flat, and have [pseudocyphellae](/source/Pseudocyphella) (tiny pores for air exchange) as well as patches of [pruina](/source/Pruina). The thallus underside is black; the internal [medulla](/source/Medulla_(lichenology)) is white. The lichen contains [triterpenoid](/source/Triterpenoid) compounds as well as [lichexanthone](/source/Lichexanthone); the latter substance causes the lichen to [fluoresce](/source/Fluoresce) when lit with a long-wavelength [UV light](/source/UV_light).[2]

*Pyxine lilacina* is only known to occur in [Uganda](/source/Uganda) and [Kenya](/source/Kenya), where it grows on fully or partially exposed rocks, at elevations ranging between 1,100 to 1,700 m (3,600 to 5,600 ft).[2]
