The genus ''Pystira'' was erected by [Eugène Simon](/source/Eug%C3%A8ne_Simon) in 1901 with the [type species](/source/type_species) ''[Pystira ephippigera](/source/Pystira_ephippigera)'', which he had originally placed in a different genus (''Hadrosoma'', no longer in use) when he first described it in 1885.<ref name=WSC_g4630/> In 2015, Junxia Zhang and [Wayne Maddison](/source/Wayne_Maddison) synonymized ''Pystira'' with ''[Omoedus](/source/Omoedus)'',<ref name=ZhanMadd15/> but this was rejected by [Jerzy Prószyński](/source/Jerzy_Pr%C3%B3szy%C5%84ski) in 2017,<ref name=Pros17/> and the genus is accepted by the [World Spider Catalog](/source/World_Spider_Catalog) {{As of|2020|August|lc=yes}}.<ref name=WSC_g4630/>

When synonymized with ''Omoedus'', the genus was placed in the tribe [Euophryini](/source/Euophryini) in Maddison's 2015 classification of the family Salticidae.<ref name=Madd15/> Prószyński placed the separated genus in his informal group euophryines.<ref name=Pros17/>
