It is a long-legged crab with a trident-shaped [rostrum](/source/rostrum_(anatomy)), and occurs in Atlantic waters from [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina) to west [Florida](/source/Florida), and in the [Gulf of Mexico](/source/Gulf_of_Mexico) through the [Yucatán Peninsula](/source/Yucat%C3%A1n_Peninsula) down to [Nicaragua](/source/Nicaragua).
