It is a long-legged crab with a trident-shaped [rostrum](/source/rostrum_(anatomy)), and occurs in Atlantic waters from [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina) to west [Florida](/source/Florida), and in the [Gulf of Mexico](/source/Gulf_of_Mexico) through the [Yucatán Peninsula](/source/Yucat%C3%A1n_Peninsula) down to [Nicaragua](/source/Nicaragua). It is also found in [Cuba](/source/Cuba)n waters. This species lives in depths of {{convert|27|-|549|m}} on bottoms of mud, sand, or pebbles.<ref name="gsmfc1"/>
