# Pyroloideae

**Pyroloideae** is a [subfamily](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) of plants in the family [Ericaceae](/source/Ericaceae). It was formerly treated as a separate family, **Pyrolaceae**.[1] It has also been treated as the tribe **Pyroleae** within the subfamily [Monotropoideae](/source/Monotropoideae). It consists of four genera: *[Chimaphila](/source/Chimaphila)* containing 5 species, *[Pyrola](/source/Pyrola)* containing 30 species and *[Moneses](/source/Moneses)* and *[Orthilia](/source/Orthilia)* which are [monotypic](/source/Monotypic). They are [mixotrophic](/source/Mixotrophic), gaining nutrition from [photosynthesis](/source/Photosynthesis), but also from [mycorrhizal fungi](/source/Mycorrhizal_fungi).[2]
