'''Pylene''' ({{langx|grc|Πυλήνη}}) was a town of [ancient Aetolia](/source/ancient_Aetolia), between the [Acheolous](/source/Achelous_River) and the [Evenus](/source/Evinos), mentioned in [Homer's](/source/Homer) [Catalogue of Ships](/source/Catalogue_of_Ships) in the ''[Iliad](/source/Iliad)'',<ref>{{Cite Iliad|2.639}}</ref> is placed by [Pliny the Elder](/source/Pliny_the_Elder) on the [Corinthian Gulf](/source/Corinthian_Gulf).<ref>{{Cite Pliny|4.3}}</ref> It would therefore seem to have existed in later times. [Strabo](/source/Strabo) says that the Aeolians who took Pylene afterwards removed higher up into the country and founded [Proschium](/source/Proschium).<ref>scopulosa Pylene, Stat.
