'''Putre''' is a [Chile](/source/Chile)an [town](/source/List_of_towns_in_Chile) and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile), capital of the [Parinacota Province](/source/Parinacota_Province) in the [Arica-Parinacota Region](/source/Arica-Parinacota_Region). It is located {{convert|130|km|0|abbr=on}} east of [Arica](/source/Arica), at an altitude of {{convert|3500|m|0|abbr=on}}. The town is backdropped by [Taapaca](/source/Taapaca) volcanic complex.

Putre is on the edge of the [Lauca National Park](/source/Lauca_National_Park), and is popular with visitors to the National Park wishing to acclimatise to the altitude.

There is a historical [church](/source/Church_(building)) in Putre.

The commune also includes the localities of  Socoroma, Tignamar, Belén, Chapiquiña, [Pachama](/source/Pachama), Ancuta, Guallatiri, [Parinacota](/source/Parinacota%2C_Chile), Chucuyo and Caquena.

==Demographics==
According to the 2002 [census](/source/census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), Putre had 1,977 inhabitants (1,345 men and 632 women). Of these, 1,235 (62.5%) lived in [urban area](/source/urban_area)s and 742 (38.5%) in [rural area](/source/rural_area)s. The population fell by 29.5% (826 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.<ref name="INE"/>

==Administration==
As a commune, Putre is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/municipal_council), headed by a mayor ([alcalde](/source/alcalde)) who is directly elected every four years. Since August 2023 the mayor has been Javier Tito Huaylla (Ind./[UDI](/source/Independent_Democratic_Union)), who was elected by the communal council following the former mayor Maricel Gutiérrez Castro (Ind.) died in July 2023. The communal council has the following members:

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/electoral_divisions_of_Chile), Putre is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by Mr. Nino Baltolu ([UDI](/source/Independent_Democratic_Union)) and Mr. Orlando Vargas ([PPD](/source/Party_for_Democracy_(Chile))) as part of the 1st electoral district, which includes the entire [Arica and Parinacota Region](/source/Arica_and_Parinacota_Region).The commune is represented in the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Chile) by Fulvio Rossi Ciocca ([PS](/source/Socialist_Party_of_Chile)) and Jaime Orpis Bouchon (UDI) as part of the 1st senatorial constituency ([Arica and Parinacota Region](/source/Arica_and_Parinacota_Region) and [Tarapacá Region](/source/Tarapac%C3%A1_Region)).
