It is located on the [Stepenitz](/source/Stepenitz_(Elbe)) River.

From 1815 to 1945, Putlitz was part of the [Prussian](/source/Prussia) [Province of Brandenburg](/source/Province_of_Brandenburg). From 1952 to 1990, it was part of the [Bezirk Potsdam](/source/Bezirk_Potsdam) of [East Germany](/source/East_Germany).
