'''''Puschkinia''''' is a [genus](/source/genus) of four known species of [bulb](/source/bulb)ous [perennials](/source/perennial_plant) in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Asparagaceae](/source/Asparagaceae), subfamily [Scilloideae](/source/Scilloideae).<ref name=APweb/> It is native to the [Caucasus](/source/Caucasus) and the [Middle East](/source/Middle_East).<ref name=WCSP_285958/> ''[Puschkinia scilloides](/source/Puschkinia_scilloides)'' is grown as an [ornamental bulbous plant](/source/ornamental_bulbous_plant).

==Description==
The leaves are green, strap-like, and grow in pairs. The flowers are borne in early spring in [raceme](/source/raceme)s up to about {{cvt|25|cm|in|0}} high. The six [tepal](/source/tepal)s are joined at the base to form a tube to about half their length. Like members of the former genus ''Chionodoxa'' (now a [section of ''Scilla''](/source/Scilla_sect._Chionodoxa)), the bases of the [stamen](/source/stamen)s are flattened and closely clustered in the middle of the flower; however, unlike ''Chionodoxa'', they are joined to form a cup or corona. In the related genus ''[Scilla](/source/Scilla)'' (squills), the stamens are not joined together. Seeds are borne in three-parted [capsules](/source/capsule_(fruit)). After the seed ripens in early summer, the plants become [dormant](/source/dormancy) until the next [spring](/source/spring_(season)).<ref name=Math87p145/><ref name=RixMath07/>

==Taxonomy==
The genus ''Puschkinia'' was erected by [Johann Friedrich Adam](/source/Johann_Friedrich_Adam) in 1805.<ref name=WCSP_285958/> It is named in honor of the Russian botanist [Apollo Mussin-Pushkin](/source/Apollo_Mussin-Pushkin).<ref name=RixMath07/> Now placed in the subfamily [Scilloideae](/source/Scilloideae) of the family Asparagaceae,<ref name=APweb/> like other [lilioid monocots](/source/lilioid_monocots), it was once included in the [Liliaceae](/source/Liliaceae).

===Species===
{{As of|2022|April}}, the [World Checklist of Selected Plant Families](/source/World_Checklist_of_Selected_Plant_Families) accepted four species:<ref name=WCSP_Puschkinia/>
* ''[Puschkinia bilgineri](/source/Puschkinia_bilgineri)'' <small>Yildirim</small> – Turkey
* ''[Puschkinia kurdistanica](/source/Puschkinia_kurdistanica)'' <small>Ruksans</small> – Turkey
* ''[Puschkinia peshmenii](/source/Puschkinia_peshmenii)'' <small>Rix & B.Mathew</small> - native to Turkey and Iran
* ''[Puschkinia scilloides](/source/Puschkinia_scilloides)'' <small>Adams</small> (striped squill) - native to the Caucasus, Turkey, northern Iran and Lebanon; found in mountain meadows and stony slopes up to {{convert|3,000|m|ft|abbr=on}}

==Cultivation==
''Puschkinia scilloides'' is grown as an [ornamental bulbous plant](/source/ornamental_bulbous_plant), particularly recommended as an early flowering bulb for cool, well drained positions.<ref name=Math87p145/> ''[Puschkinia peshmenii](/source/Puschkinia_peshmenii)'' is rare in cultivation.<ref name=RixMath07/>

==Culture==
In 1993, an illustration of ''Puschkinia scilloides'' was used as a [postage stamp](/source/postage_stamp) in Azerbaijan, with a series of other flowers, including ''[Iris reticulata](/source/Iris_reticulata)'', ''[Tulipa systola](/source/Tulipa_systola)'' (syn.
