# Purhus Municipality

Until 1 January 2007 **Purhus municipality** was a municipality ([Danish](/source/Danish_language), *[kommune](/source/Municipalities_of_Denmark)*) in the former [Aarhus County](/source/Aarhus_County) on the [Jutland](/source/Jutland) peninsula in central [Denmark](/source/Denmark). The municipality covered an area of 169 km2, and had a total population of 8,547 (2005). Its last mayor was Berner Nielsen, a member of the [Social Democrats](/source/Social_Democrats_(Denmark)) (*Socialdemokraterne*) [political party](/source/Politics_of_Denmark). The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of [Fårup](/source/F%C3%A5rup).

Purhus municipality ceased to exist as the result of [*Kommunalreformen* ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007)](/source/Municipalities_of_Denmark#Municipal_Reform_2007). It was merged with existing [Nørhald](/source/N%C3%B8rhald_municipality), [Randers](/source/Randers_municipality), and a portion of each of the following municipalities— [Langå](/source/Lang%C3%A5_municipality), [Mariager](/source/Mariager_municipality), and [Sønderhald](/source/S%C3%B8nderhald_municipality)— to form an enlarged Randers municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 793 km2 and a total population of 96,409 (2005). The municipality belongs to [Region Midtjylland](/source/Region_Midtjylland) ("Mid-Jutland Region").
