'''Purgi''', '''Burig''', ''Purki'', ''Purik'', ''Purigi'' or ''Puriki'' ([Tibetan script](/source/Tibetan_script): {{lang|prx|པུ་རིག་་སྐད།}}, [Nastaʿlīq script](/source/Nasta%CA%BFl%C4%ABq_script): {{lang|prx|{{nq|پُرگِی}}}}) is a [Tibetic language](/source/Tibetic_languages) closely related to the [Ladakhi](/source/Ladakhi_language)-[Balti](/source/Balti_language) language. Purgi is natively spoken by the [Purigpa people](/source/Purigpa) in [Ladakh](/source/Ladakh) region of [India](/source/India) and [Baltistan](/source/Baltistan) region of [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan). There are about 94,000 native speakers of the language in India.<ref>CENSUS OF INDIA 2011, PAPER 1 OF 2018 LANGUAGE INDIA, STATES AND UNION TERRITORIES, P. 11.</ref>

Most of the [Purigpa](/source/Purigpa)s are [Shia Muslims](/source/Shia_Islam), although a significant number of them follow [Noorbakhshi](/source/Noorbakshia_Islam) and [Sunni Islam](/source/Sunni_Islam), and a small minority of [Buddhists](/source/Buddhism) and [Bön](/source/Bon) followers reside in areas like Fokar valley, Mulbekh, Wakha. Like the Baltis, they speak an archaic Tibetan dialect closely related to Balti and [Ladakhi](/source/Ladakhi_language). Purigi is more closely related to Balti than Ladakhi, so there are different opinions among linguists in considering Purigi and Balti as different languages or simply different varieties of the same language.<ref>* N.
