'''Pulsnitz''' ({{IPA|de|ˈpʊlsnɪts|-|De-Pulsnitz.ogg}}; {{langx|hsb|Połčnica}}, {{IPA|hsb|ˈpɔwtʃnʲitsa|pron}}) is a town in the [district of Bautzen](/source/Bautzen_(district)), in the [Free State of Saxony](/source/Free_State_of_Saxony), in eastern [Germany](/source/Germany). It is situated on the small river [Pulsnitz](/source/Pulsnitz_(river)), 11&nbsp;km southwest of [Kamenz](/source/Kamenz), and 24&nbsp;km northeast of the centre of [Dresden](/source/Dresden).

==History==
Initially a [Sorbian](/source/Sorbs) stronghold and settlement, it was first mentioned in 1225.<ref name=pul>{{cite web|url=http://pulsnitz.de/pulsnitz/content/8/20081008094618.asp|title=Historie 1200 - 1700|website=Stadt Pulsnitz|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160421083839/http://pulsnitz.de/pulsnitz/content/8/20081008094618.asp|access-date=24 November 2023|archive-date=21 April 2016}}</ref> It was granted town rights in 1375.<ref name=pul/> It was raided by the [Hussites](/source/Hussites) in 1429.<ref name=pul/>

Pulsnitz became famous for its [Pfefferkuchen](/source/Lebkuchen), a type of Christmas cookie, when in 1558 the bakers of Pulsnitz received permission to bake them. Today there are still eight ''Pfefferküchlereien'' bakeries. In 1745 the ''Pfefferküchler'' [Tobias Thomas](/source/Tobias_Thomas_(baker)) was known to be practising his craft in Pulsnitz as well as in [Toruń](/source/Toru%C5%84), [Poland](/source/Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland), where the famous [Toruń gingerbread](/source/Toru%C5%84_gingerbread) were made. Pulsnitz is informally known as ''Pfefferkuchenstadt'' meaning "Gingerbread Town".

Other crafts also developed, with a linen weavers' [guild](/source/guild) founded in 1597, and the first local potter mentioned in 1653.<ref name=pul/>

During the [Thirty Years' War](/source/Thirty_Years'_War) of 1618–1648 the town suffered four fires, and in 1633 and 1680 it was hit by epidemics.<ref name=pul/>

The first [Protestant](/source/Protestant) [missionary](/source/missionary) to arrive in India, [Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg](/source/Bartholom%C3%A4us_Ziegenbalg) was born in Pulsnitz on July 10, 1682.<ref>[http://www.bautz.de/bbkl/z/ziegenbalg.shtml Bautz.de]</ref>
