# Puckane

**Puckane**, officially **Puckaun** (),[1] is a village in [County Tipperary](/source/County_Tipperary), [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland). It is also a [parish](/source/Parish) in the [Roman Catholic Diocese of Killaloe](/source/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Killaloe).[2] The village is located 10 km north of [Nenagh](/source/Nenagh) along the [R493](/source/R493_road) and close to [Lough Derg](/source/Lough_Derg_(Shannon)) and [Dromineer](/source/Dromineer). It had a population of 250 people as of the [2016 census](/source/2016_census_of_Ireland).[3]

## People

The songwriter [Shane MacGowan](/source/Shane_MacGowan) spent much of his childhood in the neighbouring townland of Carney and has immortalised a number of local places in his songs such as "The Broad Majestic Shannon". The village was also mentioned in a well-known [Christy Moore](/source/Christy_Moore) cover of [Shane MacGowan](/source/Shane_MacGowan) and The Pogues song "The Fairy Tale of New York". A local landmark is "Paddy Kennedy's Pub". [Ireland's 2015 Eurovision entrant](/source/Ireland_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest_2015) [Molly Sterling](/source/Molly_Sterling) hails from Puckane.

## Literature

It should not be confused with the [eponymous](/source/Eponymous) fictional village in [Spike Milligan](/source/Spike_Milligan)'s novel *[Puckoon](/source/Puckoon)*.

## Sport

[Kildangan GAA](/source/Kildangan_GAA) is the local [Gaelic Athletic Association](/source/Gaelic_Athletic_Association) club.[4]

## Transport

[Bus Éireann](/source/Bus_%C3%89ireann) route 322 provides a service to and from [Nenagh](/source/Nenagh) on Fridays.[5] Rail services can be accessed at [Nenagh railway station](/source/Nenagh_railway_station).
