It is [dioecious](/source/dioecious),<ref name=Sorres/> with male and female flowers on separate individuals. It is traditionally used as a medicinal plant, and appears contain compounds that inhibit the growth of ''[Staphylococcus aureus](/source/Staphylococcus_aureus)''.<ref name= Sorres/>
