**Proerna** (Ancient Greek: Πρόερνα) was a town and [polis](/source/Polis) (city-state) of [Phthiotis](/source/Achaea_Phthiotis), in [ancient Thessaly](/source/Ancient_Thessaly).[1] [Strabo](/source/Strabo) lists the town between [Thaumaci](/source/Thaumaci) and [Pharsalus](/source/Farsala), in Phthiotis, but otherwise provides no indication of its exact location.[2] [Stephanus of Byzantium](/source/Stephanus_of_Byzantium) writes **Proarna** (Προάρνα), and calls it by mistake a town of the [Malians](/source/Malians_(Greek_tribe)).[3] In 191 BCE, Proerna, which had been taken by [Antiochus III](/source/Antiochus_III), was recovered by the [consul](/source/Consul) [Manius Acilius Glabrio](/source/Manius_Acilius_Glabrio_(consul_191_BC)) during the latter's advance through Thessaly, a little while before the [Battle of Thermopylae](/source/Battle_of_Thermopylae_(191_BC)).[4] We learn from this passage of Livy that Proerna stood between Pharsalus and Thaumaci.[4]

The site of Proerna has been located at a place called *Neo Monastiri* (meaning, "new monastery") in the territory of [Gynaikokastro](/source/Gynaikokastro).[5][6]
