**ProP** is a [bacterial](/source/Bacterial) [membrane protein](/source/Membrane_protein) that is a member of the [major facilitator superfamily](/source/Major_facilitator_superfamily). It functions as an [osmosensory](/source/Osmoreceptor) and [osmoregulatory](/source/Osmoregulation#Osmoregulation_in_bacteria) [transporter](/source/Membrane_transport_protein), responding to changes in [osmotic pressure](/source/Osmotic_pressure) by importing [compatible solutes](/source/Compatible_solute) such as [proline](/source/Proline) or [glycine betaine](/source/Glycine_betaine);[1] most substrates for ProP are [zwitterions](/source/Zwitterion).[2] The activity of ProP increases with [osmotic pressure](/source/Osmotic_pressure) in cells and proteoliposomes.[3][4] ProP is a [symporter](/source/Symporter) of [hydrogen ions](/source/Hydrogen_ion) and compatible solutes, and is responsive to [potassium](/source/Potassium) concentrations.[2]

Activity of ProP has been associated with the ability of pathogenic *[E. coli](/source/E._coli)* to colonize the [urinary tract](/source/Urinary_tract).[3]
