The **Princess of Hope** () is a natural rock formation in the [Hingol National Park](/source/Hingol_National_Park) of [Lasbela](/source/Lasbela_District) in [Balochistan](/source/Balochistan,_Pakistan), [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan). It is of the type known as a [hoodoo](/source/Hoodoo_(geology)) or "fairy chimney" and which could fancifully be construed (see [mimetolith](/source/Pareidolia)) as resembling a [crowned](/source/Crown) and [skirted](/source/Skirt) female figure looking toward the horizon.[1] It is situated approximately 190 km (120 mi) from Pakistan's [financial hub](/source/Financial_centre), [Karachi](/source/Karachi), and approximately 717 km (446 mi) from the provincial capital, [Quetta](/source/Quetta).[2]

The curiously shaped rock pinnacle is located in the [Hingol National Park](/source/Hingol_National_Park) in the [Lasbela District](/source/Lasbela_District) of the province of [Balochistan](/source/Balochistan),[3] the mountainous [landscape](/source/Landscape) of which is riven with picturesque [gorges](/source/Canyon) and features unusual formations of mud and rock, shaped into their present forms by the forces of [erosion](/source/Erosion). Lasbela District forms part of the coastal strip known as the [Makran](/source/Makran), which also takes in certain coastal regions of Iran.[1]

The formation was given the name Princess of Hope by Hollywood actress [Angelina Jolie](/source/Angelina_Jolie), who visited Pakistan - including the Hingol National Park - in the year 2002 as a [UN](/source/United_Nations) [Goodwill Ambassador](/source/Goodwill_Ambassador). The name (conceived by Jolie on the spot as a spontaneous, personal reaction to the form of the monolith) stuck, having evidently appealed to then-current local sensibilities.[4][2]

Not far from the "Princess" stands another natural rock formation of [sphinx](/source/Great_Sphinx_of_Giza)-like form, the so-called "Balochistan Sphinx" (known also as the "Lion of Balochistan" or Abul-Hol) which is visible from the Buzi Pass section of the [Makran Coastal Highway](/source/Makran_Coastal_Highway).[5][6]
