The '''Primiero''' (''Primier'' in local dialect)  is a valley located in the eastern part of [Trentino](/source/Trentino), [Italy](/source/Italy). It consists of eight municipalities (''{{lang|it|comuni}}''): [Canal San Bovo](/source/Canal_San_Bovo), [Fiera di Primiero](/source/Fiera_di_Primiero), [Imèr](/source/Imer%2C_Trentino), [Mezzano](/source/Mezzano), [Sagron Mis](/source/Sagron_Mis), [Siròr](/source/Siror), [Tonadico](/source/Tonadico) and [Transacqua](/source/Transacqua).

In Primiero a [particular Venetian dialect](/source/Dialect_of_Primiero) is spoken.<ref>Provide details or delete. Venetian is certainly not limited to Primiero.</ref>

During the Roman period the '''Primiero''' was part of [Italy](/source/Roman_Italy), belonging to the region [Venetia et Histria](/source/Venetia_et_Histria). It was subsequently incorporated into the Italian kingdoms established by [Odoacer](/source/Kingdom_of_Odoacer) and the [Ostrogoths](/source/Ostrogothic_Kingdom), before being reconquered by [Emperor Justinian](/source/Emperor_Justinian) and passing to the East Roman [Praetorian prefecture of Italy](/source/Praetorian_prefecture_of_Italy). From 569 to 774 it formed part of the [Kingdom of Italy](/source/Kingdom_of_the_Lombards) under the [Longobards](/source/Longobards). In 774 the Kingdom of Italy was conquered by the [Franks](/source/Franks). The Primiero then became part of the territories ruled by the [Carolingian Kings of Italy](/source/King_of_Italy), followed by a series of independent and contesting Italic kings.

From 961 the Kingdom of Italy was [incorporated into the Holy Roman Empire](/source/Kingdom_of_Italy_(Holy_Roman_Empire)). For a long time the history of Primiero was united with that of [Feltre](/source/Feltre), as the valley was a fief or feudal dependency of the [bishop](/source/Bishop_of_Feltre) of that Venetian city. 

From 1379 until 1918, the Primiero was part of the [County of Tyrol](/source/County_of_Tyrol) which, other than a brief period when it was ceded to the [Kingdom of Bavaria](/source/Kingdom_of_Bavaria) (1807–1809) and [Kingdom of Italy](/source/Napoleonic_Kingdom_of_Italy) (1809-1814) during the Napoleonic wars, was ruled by the [Austrian](/source/Duchy_of_Austria) [Habsburg](/source/Habsburg)s (and later their successors the [Habsburg-Lorraine](/source/Habsburg-Lorraine)s). As such it successively formed part of the [Habsburg monarchy](/source/Habsburg_monarchy), the [Austrian Empire](/source/Austrian_Empire) (from 1804) and, following the [compromise of 1867](/source/compromise_of_1867), part of the [Cisleithania](/source/Cisleithania)n (Austrian-ruled) territories of [Austria-Hungary](/source/Austria-Hungary). It was ceded to Italy along with the rest of [Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol](/source/Trentino-Alto_Adige%2FS%C3%BCdtirol) in the [Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (1919)](/source/Treaty_of_Saint-Germain-en-Laye_(1919)) following Austria-Hungary's defeat in World War I.
