# Priit Pius

**Priit Pius** (born 4 February 1989)[1] is an Estonian stage, television, and film actor whose career began in the 2010s.

## Early life and education

Priit Pius was born in Tallinn to Jüri and Nelli Pius (*née* Paap). His twin brother is actor [Märt Pius](/source/M%C3%A4rt_Pius). He has one older brother, as well as two half-siblings from his father's previous marriage. He grew up in and attended schools in Tallinn before the family moved to the small village of [Mällikvere](/source/M%C3%A4llikvere) in [Jõgeva County](/source/J%C3%B5geva_County), where he graduated from secondary school in 2008.[2] Afterward, both he and his twin brother Märt enrolled in the Performing Arts Department of the [Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre](/source/Estonian_Academy_of_Music_and_Theatre) to study acting, graduating in 2012. Pius' diploma production roles were as Tuomas in [Aleksis Kivi](/source/Aleksis_Kivi)'s *[Seven Brothers](/source/Seitsem%C3%A4n_veljest%C3%A4)*, Gerry Evans in [Brian Friel](/source/Brian_Friel)'s *[Dancing at Lughnasa](/source/Dancing_at_Lughnasa)*, and as [Tom Canty](/source/Tom_Canty) in [Mark Twain](/source/Mark_Twain)'s *[The Prince and the Pauper](/source/The_Prince_and_the_Pauper)*.[3]

## Career

Following his graduation from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, both Pius brothers began engagements at the [Tallinn City Theatre](/source/Tallinn_City_Theatre) in 2012 and are both still currently engaged at the theatre as actors. Among his more memorable roles in theater were in works by such varied authors and playwrights as: [Florian Zeller](/source/Florian_Zeller), [Eduard Bornhöhe](/source/Eduard_Bornh%C3%B6he), [Anton Chekhov](/source/Anton_Chekhov), [Duncan Macmillan](/source/Duncan_Macmillan_(playwright)), [Otfried Preußler](/source/Otfried_Preu%C3%9Fler), [Marina Carr](/source/Marina_Carr), [Ferenc Molnár](/source/Ferenc_Moln%C3%A1r), [Richard Greenberg](/source/Richard_Greenberg), [A. H. Tammsaare](/source/A._H._Tammsaare), [Molière](/source/Moli%C3%A8re), [Neil Simon](/source/Neil_Simon), and [Peter Barnes](/source/Peter_Barnes_(playwright)). He has also performed on several other theatre stages throughout Estonia.[4]

Pius' began appearing in student films and short films in 2010. In 2014, he was cast, along with his brother Märt, as the Käär brothers in the [Elmo Nüganen](/source/Elmo_N%C3%BCganen)-directed war drama *[1944](/source/1944_(film))* which was selected as the 2015 Estonian entry for the [Best Foreign Language Film](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film) at the [88th Academy Awards](/source/88th_Academy_Awards) but it was not nominated.[5] In 2015, Pius had a starring role as Eero in the Urmas Eero Liiv-directed thriller *Must alpinist* for Kopli Kinokompanii. The film is loosely based on the events of the [Dyatlov Pass incident](/source/Dyatlov_Pass_incident) of 2 February 1959, where nine ski hikers mysteriously died in the northern [Ural Mountains](/source/Ural_Mountains) after establishing a camp on the slopes of [Kholat Syakhl](/source/Kholat_Syakhl). However, the film differs in many key ways from the original incident.[6][7] In 2017, he appeared in two films; the Priit Pääsuke-directed drama *Keti lõpp* and the [Andres Puustusmaa](/source/Andres_Puustusmaa)-directed comedy *Rohelised kassid*.[8] In 2018, he appeared in the [Anu Aun](/source/Anu_Aun) directed family-[Christmas](/source/Christmas) film *Eia jõulud Tondikakul*.[9]

Priit Pius has also appeared as television actor, most notably in the role of Oliver in the 2015 [Kanal 2](/source/Kanal_2) drama series *Restart*. In 2018, he began playing the role of Ricky Bamberg in the Kanal 2 television comedy series *Alo*, also featuring his brother Märt, playing the role of Martin Bamberg.[10]

In 2021, Piius directed the six-part television drama series *Süü*.[11]

## Personal life

Priit Pius married actress [Maiken Schmidt](/source/Maiken_Pius) in July 2019. They had a son on 22 March 2018.[12][13] On 18 March 2020, they had a daughter.[14]

Both Priit and Märt Pius have been diagnosed with [Diabetes mellitus type 1](/source/Diabetes_mellitus_type_1) and speak openly about living with the condition in order to raise awareness of the illness.[15][16]
