The **Prebaetic System** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *Sistemas Prebéticos* or *Sistema Prebético*, also often referred to simply as *Prebético*[1]) is a system of mountain ranges that forms the northeasternmost prolongation of the [Baetic System](/source/Baetic_System) in the southern [Iberian Peninsula](/source/Iberian_Peninsula).

## Geography

Although it is sometimes referred to as *Cordillera Prebética*, it is not a proper cordillera, or continuous alignment of ranges, but a broken system of mountain ranges. Unlike the other two subsystems of the Baetic System, it is not present in the western area, but begins west of the eastern edge of the [Sierra Sur de Jaén](/source/Sierra_Sur_de_Ja%C3%A9n) near [Martos](/source/Martos).

The Prebaetic System runs along eastern interior [Andalusia](/source/Andalusia), across the [Region of Murcia](/source/Region_of_Murcia), reaching the [Mediterranean Sea](/source/Mediterranean_Sea) shores in the southern [Valencian Community](/source/Valencian_Community).[2]

Its highest point is [La Sagra](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=La_Sagra_(peak)&action=edit&redlink=1), [Sierra de la Sagra](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sierra_de_la_Sagra&action=edit&redlink=1); other high ranges are [Sierra de Segura](/source/Sierra_de_Segura) and [Sierra de Cazorla](/source/Sierra_de_Cazorla). The [Sierra de María](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sierra_de_Mar%C3%ADa&action=edit&redlink=1) in northern [Almeria Province](/source/Almeria_Province) runs across the Prebaetic and the Penibaetic System, overlapping with both.

## Geology

[Geologically](/source/Geologically) the Prebaetic System shares similar characteristics to its parent system, the [Subbaetic System](/source/Subbaetic_System) and it is considered its eastern offshoot. The materials that compose it were formed in a relatively shallow sea.[3] The [Iberian System](/source/Iberian_System) rises north of the eastern part of the Prebaetic System.
