{{Short description|Israeli voluntary service program}}
The Pre-Army '''Service Year''' ({{langx|he|שנת שירות}}, ''Shnat Sherut''), abbreviated '''Shin-Shin''' ({{langx|he|ש״ש}}), is a one-year voluntary service program for [Israeli](/source/Israelis) high school graduates prior to their mandatory service in the [Israel Defense Forces](/source/Israel_Defense_Forces) (IDF).

Unlike [gap year](/source/gap_year)s offered in other countries, the Service Year is entirely devoted towards volunteer work, and offers no material reward for participants.<ref>{{cite web|title=www.ivolunteer.org.il|url=http://www.ivolunteer.org.il/Eng/Index.asp?ArticleID=114&CategoryID=131}}</ref> Service Year volunteers work full-time in a various fields: assisting [development town](/source/development_town)s and disadvantaged communities, residential schools for youth at risk, youth movements, nature/[ecological](/source/ecological) organizations, and many other civic organizations and projects. Through the [Jewish Agency for Israel](/source/Jewish_Agency_for_Israel), some spend up to ten months of the year volunteering in the UK, Canada, the United States, and other countries.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://archive.jewishagency.org/shlichim-israeli-emissaries/program/285 |title=Service Year Shlichim - Shin-shinim |date=23 August 2018 |access-date=11 March 2020 |website=Jewish Agency}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.milwaukeejewish.org/departments/israel/p2g/shinshin/ |title=Shin Shinim |website=Milwaukee Jewish Federation |date=29 January 2014 |access-date=11 March 2020}}</ref>

In order to participate in a Service Year, prospective volunteers must defer their compulsory military service. However, the number of deferments allowed by the IDF is limited, making acceptance into the Service Year program selective and competitive.

Conscription rates among Service Year graduates are nearly 100%, and many of the volunteers are accepted into the most elite units of the IDF.{{citation needed|date=March 2020}}
