# Power margin

In [telecommunications](/source/Telecommunications), the **power margin** is the difference between available [signal](/source/Signal) [power](/source/Power_(physics)) and the minimum signal power needed to overcome [system](/source/System) losses and still satisfy the minimum input requirements of the receiver for a given performance level.

System power [margin](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/margin) reflects the excess [signal level](/source/Signal_level), present at the input of the receiver, that is available to compensate for (a) the effects of [component](/source/Electronic_component) aging in the transmitter, receiver, or physical [transmission medium](/source/Transmission_medium), and (b) a deterioration in [propagation](/source/Wave_propagation) conditions. *Synonym* **system power margin.**
