**Powburn** is a small village on the [A697](/source/A697_road) in [Northumberland](/source/Northumberland), England about 8 miles (13 km) south of [Wooler](/source/Wooler) and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of [Alnwick](/source/Alnwick).

## Landmarks

The [Devil's Causeway](/source/Devil's_Causeway) passes through the village and continues north under the [A697 road](/source/A697_road) crossing the [River Till](/source/River_Till,_Northumberland). The causeway is a [Roman](/source/Ancient_Rome) road which starts at [Portgate](/source/Portgate) on [Hadrian's Wall](/source/Hadrian's_Wall), north of [Corbridge](/source/Corbridge), and extends 55 miles (89 km) northwards across Northumberland to the mouth of the [River Tweed](/source/River_Tweed) at [Berwick-upon-Tweed](/source/Berwick-upon-Tweed).

By the roadside a stiff half-mile eastwards from Powburn is Crawley Tower, a fine medieval Border [pele](/source/Peel_tower). The fortification is a strong one (its defensive ditch is still imposing) and probably guarded the crossing, near the former [Hedgeley railway station](/source/Hedgeley_railway_station), of the Breamish by the Devil's Causeway.[1]
