# Potter Smith

**Thomas Potter Smith** (July 1901 – 1 September 1978) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who made nearly 400 appearances in the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) playing as an [inside left](/source/Inside_left) or [left half](/source/Left_half) for [Merthyr Town](/source/Merthyr_Town_F.C.) (two spells), [Hull City](/source/Hull_City_A.F.C.), [Hartlepools United](/source/Hartlepools_United), [Cardiff City](/source/Cardiff_City_F.C.) and [Brighton & Hove Albion](/source/Brighton_%26_Hove_Albion), where he spent the majority of his career.

## Life and career

Smith was born in [Newcastle upon Tyne](/source/Newcastle_upon_Tyne).[1] He played local football for St Peter's Albion before beginning a tour of the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League). After single seasons with [Merthyr Town](/source/Merthyr_Town_F.C.), [Hull City](/source/Hull_City_A.F.C.), [Hartlepools United](/source/Hartlepool_United_F.C.) and Merthyr Town again, before joining [Cardiff City](/source/Cardiff_City_F.C.) in 1929, where he spent three seasons disrupted by injury. In 1929, he signed for [Brighton & Hove Albion](/source/Brighton_%26_Hove_Albion), where he established himself as a first-team regular, averaging 40 league matches a season over an eight-year spell. After a season with [Crystal Palace](/source/Crystal_Palace_F.C.) without a league appearance,[1][2] he moved into [non-league football](/source/Non-league_football) with [Gloucester City](/source/Gloucester_City_A.F.C.), where he acted as [player-coach](/source/Player-coach).[3] Smith died in [Brighton](/source/Brighton) in 1978 at the age of 77.[1]
