In [linguistics](/source/linguistics), a '''postbase''' is a special kind of [grammatical](/source/grammar) [suffix](/source/suffix)ing [morpheme](/source/morpheme) that is suffixed to a base. It is mostly found in [Eskimo–Aleut languages](/source/Eskimo%E2%80%93Aleut_languages) and [Formosan Languages](/source/Formosan_languages).{{fact|date=May 2020}} Postbases differ from most other [affix](/source/affix)es in that they usually carry a much more salient [semantic](/source/semantics) content than affixes in other languages and are semantically more akin to [verb](/source/verb)s. In Eskimo–Aleut languages meanings such as "to have", "to want", "to think", "to say" are usually expressed by postbases.
