The old **Posta del Chuy** is a historic [inn](/source/Inn) situated 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) away from [Melo](/source/Melo,_Uruguay), [Cerro Largo](/source/Cerro_Largo_Department), [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay).

## History

The inn was intended for travelers going by [diligence](/source/Diligence_(vehicle)) from Melo to Villa Artigas (now [Río Branco](/source/R%C3%ADo_Branco)).

Built in 1855 by two [Basque](/source/Basque_people) men named Etcheverry, the solid stone building is unique in South America.[1]

### Heritage

Historian [Horacio Arredondo](/source/Horacio_Arredondo) promoted the restoration of the building and bridge. It has been declared a site of [National Heritage](/source/National_heritage_site).[2] The history of its construction is described in "Los árboles de piedra" by Andrés Echevarría.
