It depicts the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England) cleric [Benjamin Hoadly](/source/Benjamin_Hoadly), then serving as [Bishop of Winchester](/source/Bishop_of_Winchester).<ref>Einberg & Egerton p.101</ref><ref>Bindman p.52</ref> A strong supporter of the [Hanoverian Succession](/source/Hanoverian_Succession), Hoadly was known for initiating the [Bangorian Controversy](/source/Bangorian_Controversy) earlier in his career. 

Hogarth depicts him in his robes as bishop and as prelate as the [Order of the Garter](/source/Order_of_the_Garter). Behind him is a [stained glass window](/source/stained_glass_window) featuring [Saint Paul](/source/Saint_Paul), a reference to Hoadly's own [Pauline theology](/source/Pauline_Christianity).
