Anderson and was first published on May 1, 1888, by  C. B. Anderson & Company.<ref name="Miller">{{cite book|page=460|title=The History of Current Maine Newspapers|first=Alan Robert|last= Miller|year= 1978|publisher=Eastland Press}}</ref> Its first editor was George B. Bagley.<ref>{{cite book|title=Portland City Guide: The American Guide Series|year=1940|author=Workers of the Writers' Program of the [Work Projects Administration](/source/Work_Projects_Administration) in the State of Maine|publisher=Forest City Printing Company|page=176}}</ref> Bagley, who was concurrently the publisher of ''The Portland Globe'', acquired the ''Portland Sunday Telegram''' from Anderson not long after the newspaper started publishing. At this point Thomas J.
