**Porters Pass** (elevation 939 metres) is a [mountain pass](/source/Mountain_pass) in the [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury,_New_Zealand) region of New Zealand's [South Island](/source/South_Island).

It is near [Lake Lyndon](/source/Lake_Lyndon) and is located within Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park. [State Highway 73](/source/New_Zealand_State_Highway_73) travels through the pass on its route from [Springfield](/source/Springfield,_New_Zealand) to [Cass](/source/Cass,_New_Zealand), and it is the last mountain pass on the route eastwards from [Westland](/source/West_Coast,_New_Zealand) to [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch). It is also the third-highest point on the South Island's state highway network, after the [Lindis Pass](/source/Lindis_Pass) and the [Milford Road](/source/Milford_Road) (though it is just one metre lower). Although [Arthur's Pass](/source/Arthur's_Pass_(mountain_pass)) is better known, Porters Pass is a few metres higher, and it affords views of the [Canterbury Plains](/source/Canterbury_Plains). The Porter brothers, who were farming nearby, named the pass in 1858.[1]
