==Early life==
Born in [Victor, New York](/source/Victor%2C_New_York), Sheldon completed preparatory studies, studied law, and was [admitted to the bar](/source/Admission_to_the_bar_in_the_United_States) in 1854 at [Batavia, New York](/source/Batavia%2C_New_York).

==Career==
Sheldon commenced practice in [Randolph, New York](/source/Randolph%2C_New_York), then moved to [Rockford, Illinois](/source/Rockford%2C_Illinois), in 1857 and continued the practice of law. Elected as a [Republican](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)) to the [Forty-first](/source/41st_United_States_Congress) Congress, Sheldon was a [United States representative](/source/United_States_House_of_Representatives) for the [thirty-first](/source/31st_New_York_Congressional_district) district of New York from March 4, 1869 &ndash; March 3, 1871. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1870, he resumed the practice of his profession.
