## History

The [Georgia General Assembly](/source/Georgia_General_Assembly) incorporated Portal as a town in 1914.[4] It is unknown why the name "Portal" was applied to this place.[5]

## Geography

Portal is located at [32°32′14″N 81°55′54″W / 32.53722°N 81.93167°W / 32.53722; -81.93167](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Portal,_Georgia&params=32_32_14_N_81_55_54_W_type:city) (32.537275, -81.931738).[6] According to the [United States Census Bureau](/source/United_States_Census_Bureau), the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 km2), of which 2.1 square miles (5.5 km2) is land and 0.077 square miles (0.2 km2), or 2.99%, is water.[7]
