# Port Penrhyn

**Port Penrhyn** (Welsh: *Porth Penrhyn*) is a harbour located just east of [Bangor](/source/Bangor,_Wales) in north [Wales](/source/Wales) at the confluence of the [River Cegin](/source/River_Cegin) with the [Menai Strait](/source/Menai_Strait). It was formerly of great importance as the main port for the export of [slate](/source/Slate_industry_in_Wales) from the [Penrhyn Quarry](/source/Penrhyn_Quarry),[1] the largest slate quarry in the world at the end of the nineteenth century. The quarry and the port were connected by the [Penrhyn Quarry Railway](/source/Penrhyn_Quarry_Railway).[2]

It was built, and later expanded, by the Pennant (later Douglas-Pennant) family of the nearby [Penrhyn Castle](/source/Penrhyn_Castle).

*Penrhyn* is the [Welsh](/source/Welsh_language) word for 'promontory'.

The port is used by coastal vessels up to about and by fishing vessels.
