Frankish nobleman

**Poppo I** (died 839–841) was a [Frankish](/source/Franks) count in the Grapfeld ([Grabfeld](/source/Grabfeld)) from 819–839. As a grandson of [Heimrich, Count in the Upper Rheingau](/source/Heimrich%2C_Count_in_the_Upper_Rheingau), he was a descendant of the [Robertian](/source/Robertians) count [Cancor](/source/Cancor). He was the founder of the Frankish [Popponids](/source/Popponids) (later more known as the [House of Babenberg](/source/House_of_Babenberg)).

Poppo was a "leading man of the Franks" in 838-839, when he and several other noblemen, including [Gebhard, Count of the Lahngau](/source/Gebhard%2C_Count_of_the_Lahngau), Count [Adalbert of Metz](/source/Adalbert_of_Metz_(died_841)) and Archbishop [Odgar of Mainz](/source/Odgar_of_Mainz) opposed [Louis the German](/source/Louis_the_German)'s revolt against Emperor [Louis the Pious](/source/Louis_the_Pious).

Poppo was either the father or the grandfather of [Margrave Henry of Franconia](/source/Henry%2C_Margrave_of_the_Franks), [Duke Poppo II of Thuringia](/source/Poppo%2C_Duke_of_Thuringia) and [Egino](/source/Egino%2C_Duke_of_Thuringia).
