It is located in the extreme north-west of the state, abutting [Cameron Corner](/source/Cameron_Corner_Survey_Marker). It includes parts of [Sturt National Park](/source/Sturt_National_Park).

Poole County was named in honour of [James Poole](/source/James_Poole_(explorer)), (born?–1845), [Charles Sturt](/source/Charles_Sturt)'s second-in-command.<ref>{{NSW GNR|id=KWQloeUlGH|title=Poole County|accessdate=}}</ref>
