Main article: [Public Land Survey System](/source/Public_Land_Survey_System)

The **point of beginning** is a [surveyor](/source/Surveyor_(surveying))'s mark at the beginning location for the wide-scale surveying of land.

An example is the [Beginning Point of the U.S. Public Land Survey](/source/Beginning_Point_of_the_U.S._Public_Land_Survey) that led to the opening of the [Northwest Territory](/source/Northwest_Territory), and is the starting point of the surveys of almost all other lands to the west, reaching all the way to the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean).[1] On September 30, 1785, [Thomas Hutchins](/source/Thomas_Hutchins), first and only Geographer of the United States,[2] began surveying the [Seven Ranges](/source/Seven_Ranges) at the point of beginning.[3]
