'''Pogibi''' ({{langx|ru|Погиби}}) is a [rural locality](/source/types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) (a ''[selo](/source/village)'') in [Sakhalin Oblast](/source/Sakhalin_Oblast), [Russia](/source/Russia). It is located at Cape Pogibi, the closest point on the island of [Sakhalin](/source/Sakhalin) to the Russian mainland, only 7.5 km across the [Strait of Nevelskoy](/source/Strait_of_Nevelskoy) at this point.
==Transport==
During the years 1950–53, the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union) under [Joseph Stalin](/source/Joseph_Stalin) began construction of a [tunnel linking Sakhalin with the mainland](/source/Sakhalin_Tunnel), with its western (mainland) portal at [Cape Lazarev](/source/Lazarev_(urban-type_settlement)) and its eastern (island) portal at Pogibi. The project would have also entailed building a railway connecting Pogibi with the settlement of [Pobedino](/source/Pobedino) in central Sakhalin, which at the time was the northernmost extent of the [Sakhalin Railway](/source/Sakhalin_Railway).[[http://www.sakhalin.ru/Region/tunnel/build.htm Maps of Sakhalin rail system around Pobedino dating from 1945-1986] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110614032101/http://www.sakhalin.ru/Region/tunnel/build.htm |date=2011-06-14 }}] Construction stopped after Stalin's death, without any new track having built on Sakhalin; however the island's rail system was later extended northwards to [Nogliki](/source/Nogliki) and [Okha](/source/Okha%2C_Russia).

Should the railway systems be connected by this bridge, the [narrow gauge](/source/narrow_gauge_railway) ({{RailGauge|1067mm}}) tracks on the island would be converted to the {{RailGauge|1520mm}} gauge of the mainland.
