The **Podmaine Monastery** ([Serbian](/source/Serbian_language): Манастир Подмаине, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Serbian): *Manastir Podmaine*) is a [Serbian Orthodox](/source/Serbian_Orthodox_Church) [monastery](/source/List_of_Serbian_monasteries) built in the 15th century by the [Crnojević noble family](/source/Crnojevi%C4%87_noble_family) in Podmaine near [Budva](/source/Budva), [Zeta](/source/Zeta_under_the_Crnojevi%C4%87i) (modern-day [Montenegro](/source/Montenegro)).[1][2] The monastery has two churches, smaller and older church of [Presentation of the Mother of God](/source/Presentation_of_Mary) was built by [Crnojević noble family](/source/Crnojevi%C4%87_noble_family) in the 15th century while bigger church (of Dormition of the Mother of God) was built in 1747.

## Etymology

The name Podmaine (Pod-Maine) means "beneath Maine". [Maine](/source/Maine%2C_Budva) was a small [Albanian](/source/Albanians) tribe with territory below [Lovćen](/source/Lov%C4%87en), between [Stanjevići Monastery](/source/Stanjevi%C4%87i_Monastery) and Budva.[3] The monastery was the gathering place of the tribe, who traditionally held meetings on the [feast day](/source/Feast_day) of [St. George](/source/St._George).[4]

## History

The exact year of establishment of the monastery is unknown. The church of Dormition of the Mother of God was built in the 15th century and reconstructed in 1630 while its larger church (Church of St. Petka) was built in 1747.[5]

[Metropolitan Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš](/source/Metropolitan_Danilo_I_Petrovi%C4%87-Njego%C5%A1) died in Podmaine Monastery in 1735. He was buried in the monastery but his remnants were later moved to [Cetinje](/source/Cetinje).[6][7] [Dositej Obradović](/source/Dositej_Obradovi%C4%87) lived several months in the monastery when he visited Boka in 1764.[8]

In 1830 [Petar II Petrović-Njegoš](/source/Petar_II_Petrovi%C4%87-Njego%C5%A1), based on the request of the [emperor of Russia](/source/Emperor_of_Russia), sold Podmaine Monastery and Stanjevići Monastery together with their estates to the [Austrian Empire](/source/Austrian_Empire).[9]

Njegoš wrote parts of his masterpiece [The Mountain Wreath](/source/The_Mountain_Wreath) in Podmaine Monastery.[10]

## Frescoes

Frescoes in the Church of St. Petka were painted by Rafail Dimitrijević from [Risan](/source/Risan) in 1747 and Nicholaos Aspioti from [Corfu](/source/Corfu).[11][12] The monastery was burned down in 1869.[13] In the 1979 earthquake the monastery was significantly damaged and in 2002 it was completely rebuilt and new frescoes were painted in the smaller church (dedicated to the [Dormition of the Mother of God](/source/Dormition_of_the_Mother_of_God)). According to some views one of the frescoes titled *Sinful bishops and emperors* ([Serbian](/source/Serbian_language): Лажни епископи и цареви) presents a former Yugoslav leader [Tito](/source/Josip_Broz_Tito) and heads of the uncanonical [Montenegrin Orthodox Church](/source/Montenegrin_Orthodox_Church) as [damned](/source/Damnation) and handed over to devils who herd them down into [hell](/source/Hell) in a modern version of the [Last Judgment](/source/Last_Judgment).[14]
