'''Pocitos''' is an upscale seaside [''barrio'' of Montevideo](/source/Barrios_of_Montevideo), [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay). It borders [Buceo](/source/Buceo) to the east, [Parque Batlle](/source/Parque_Batlle) to the north, [Tres Cruces](/source/Tres_Cruces), [Cordón](/source/Cord%C3%B3n) and [Parque Rodó](/source/Parque_Rod%C3%B3) to the west and [Punta Carretas](/source/Punta_Carretas) to the south.

Pocitos is politically included in the CH Municipality of Montevideo, and located along the banks of the [Rio de la Plata](/source/R%C3%ADo_de_la_Plata), it is one of the most famous beaches in the city.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2019-02-13 |title=Rambla de Pocitos |url=https://www.elpais.com.uy/opinion/ecos/rambla-de-pocitos |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=EL PAIS |language=en}}</ref> The neighborhood is an affluent area of the city, characterized by the presence of high-rise apartment buildings facing the [Rambla](/source/Rambla_of_Montevideo) and the main boulevards, together with old [neoclassical](/source/Neoclassical_architecture) and eclectic mansions.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2017-08-05 |title=Cae la última casa antigua sobre la rambla de Pocitos |url=https://www.elpais.com.uy/informacion/cae-la-ultima-casa-antigua-sobre-la-rambla-de-pocitos |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=EL PAIS |language=en}}</ref>

The neighborhood emerged as a seaside resort in the 19th century, but it was formally inaugurated in 1886, under the name of ''Nuestra Señora de los Pocitos''.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2022-07-02 |title=Barrio Pocitos {{!}} Municipio CH |url=https://municipioch.montevideo.gub.uy/node/172 |access-date=2023-07-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220702043958/https://municipioch.montevideo.gub.uy/node/172 |archive-date=2022-07-02 }}</ref> The name is due to the habit of washerwomen going to the beach to wash their clothes, for which they made wells ({{Langx|es|Pozos}}) in the clean sand.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Lava la ropa, mulata |url=http://viajes.elpais.com.uy/2021/12/12/lava-la-ropa-mulata/ |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=viajes.elpais.com.uy |language=en-ES}}</ref> Initially it was an independent town from the city, but over time it was absorbed with the urban expansion of Montevideo.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2020-10-15 |title=El Pocitos de ayer |url=https://www.elpais.com.uy/especiales/el-pocitos-de-ayer |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=EL PAIS |language=en}}</ref>

In 1906, a tram line was inaugurated that connected the Customs House in the [Ciudad Vieja](/source/Ciudad_Vieja%2C_Montevideo) with Pocitos.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2016-09-25 |title=60 años sin tranvías |url=https://www.elpais.com.uy/domingo/60-anos-sin-tranvias |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=EL PAIS |language=en}}</ref> This increased the popularity of the area, which became more accessible to the inhabitants of the downtown area of the city. In addition, the eclectic-style Gran Hotel Pocitos was built, which was a symbol of social status at the time.<ref>{{Cite web |title=IM realizó limpieza en Playa pocitos y desenterró restos de antiguo hotel |url=https://www.montevideo.com.uy/Noticias/IM-realizo-limpieza-en-Playa-pocitos-y-desenterro-restos-de-antiguo-hotel-uc279034 |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=Montevideo Portal |language=es}}</ref> The building was partially destroyed due to a storm in 1923 and years later it closed permanently.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2015-07-28 |title=Limpian playa y aparecen restos del Hotel de los Pocitos |url=https://www.elpais.com.uy/informacion/limpian-playa-y-aparecen-restos-del-hotel-de-los-pocitos |access-date=2023-07-24 |website=EL PAIS |language=en}}</ref>

In the 1920s and 1930s it became a residential area, due to the construction of a large number of private residences of European architecture. In 1921 a [multipurpose stadium](/source/Estadio_Pocitos) was built in the area, which was one of the venues of the first [FIFA World Cup](/source/FIFA_World_Cup) held in [1930](/source/1930_FIFA_World_Cup), and site of the first goal in World Cup history.<ref>{{Cite news |title=La curiosa historia de la casa de Uruguay donde se marcó el primer gol en la historia de los Mundiales de fútbol |language=es |work=BBC News Mundo |url=https://www.bbc.com/mundo/deportes-43882051 |access-date=2023-07-24}}</ref> In the following years there was a great real estate development, and by the 1950s, Pocitos already surpassed [Centro](/source/Centro%2C_Montevideo) in number of apartment buildings.<ref>{{Cite web |title=PLAN ESPECIAL DE ORDENACIÓN, PROTECCIÓN Y MEJORA DE POCITOS - Intendencia de Montevideo |url=https://montevideo.gub.uy/sites/default/files/biblioteca/1memoriainformacion.pdf}}</ref> Architects such as Walter Pintos Risso, [Luis García Pardo](/source/Luis_Garc%C3%ADa_Pardo), Raúl Sichero Bouret, Gonzalo Vázquez Barrière and others are household names in Pocitos.

The neighborhood fell victim to even greater [gentrification](/source/gentrification) throughout the 1970s and 1980s as many high-rise apartment buildings for affluent residents were constructed.<ref>{{cite web |author=<!-- not stated --> |title=The Interior, Littoral, Greater Montevideo and Coast |url=https://countrystudies.us/uruguay/28.htm |website=[Country Studies](/source/Library_of_Congress_Country_Studies) |publisher=[Library of Congress](/source/Library_of_Congress) |access-date=4 October 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last=Portes |first=Alejandro |date=1989 |title=Latin American Urbanization during the Years of the Crisis |url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/2503697 |journal=[Latin American Research Review](/source/Latin_American_Research_Review) |volume=24 |issue=3 |pages=19 |access-date=4 October 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite thesis |last=Florencia Castelló Robaina |first=María |date=2015 |title=Gentrificación en Montevideo: una mirada desde Ciudad Vieja y Barrio Sur |url=https://www.colibri.udelar.edu.uy/jspui/bitstream/20.500.12008/9987/1/TS_Castell%C3%B3Mar%C3%ADaFlorencia.pdf |degree=Sociology |page=8-9 |location=Montevideo |publisher=[University of the Republic](/source/University_of_the_Republic_(Uruguay)) |access-date=4 October 2025}}</ref>
