**Pochalla** (also Pochala, Pochella, Pachella) is a town in [Pochalla County](/source/Pochalla_County), [Boma State](/source/Boma_State), eastern [South Sudan](/source/South_Sudan), on the international border with [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia). The town sits on the eastern edge of [Boma National Park](/source/Boma_National_Park). This location lies approximately 470 kilometres (290 mi), by road, northeast of [Juba](/source/Juba,_South_Sudan), the capital and largest city in [South Sudan](/source/South_Sudan).

## History

During the [Second Sudanese Civil War](/source/Second_Sudanese_Civil_War) (1983 - 2005), Pochalla witnessed many atrocities and tragedies, as did most [South Sudanese](/source/South_Sudan) towns. The town and surrounding communities was home to the [Anyuak of South Sudan](/source/Anyuak_of_South_Sudan).[1]

In January 2004, there were reports of [Anuak](/source/Anyuak_people) refugees arriving at Pochalla who had fled southwestern [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia) as a consequence of the violent clashes between "highlanders" (Ethiopians originating from outside the [Gambela Region](/source/Gambela_Region)) and Anyuak that had erupted in and around [Gambela](/source/Gambela,_Ethiopia) after the killing of eight Ethiopian Government refugee camp officials on 13 December 2003.[2]

## Transport

The town is served by [Pochalla Airport](/source/Pochalla_Airport). The road network around Pochalla is very rudimentary.
