***Poblana squamata***, the **Quechulac silverside**, is a species of [neotropical silverside](/source/Neotropical_silverside) [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [Mexico](/source/Mexico).[2] It is only found in the [volcanic crater lake](/source/Volcanic_crater_lake) of [Quechulac](/source/Oriental_Basin#Maar_lakes) which is 6.5 kilometres (4.0 miles) southeast of [Alchichica](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alchichica&action=edit&redlink=1), [Puebla State](/source/Puebla_State), Mexico at an elevation of 2,365 metres (7,759 ft). It was first [described](/source/Species_description) by Jose Álvarez del Villar in 1950 from [types](/source/Type_(biology)) collected from the lake.[3]

The lake is approximately half a kilometre square and 39 metres (128 ft) deep. The fish only inhabit some areas of the lake, avoiding the steep slopes and preferring areas where [sedges](/source/Cyperaceae) grow. Due to this extremely small habitat area, the species is listed as Critically Endangered on the [IUCN Red List](/source/IUCN_Red_List). While the lake is not affected by human alteration, there is danger of overfishing.[1]

It prefers [pelagic](/source/Pelagic_zone) (open water) areas. Its diet is [omnivorous](/source/Omnivorous) and consists of [crustaceans](/source/Crustaceans). [algae](/source/Algae), insects, and sometimes its own larvae.[4]
