The '''Plottier Formation''' is a [geologic formation](/source/geologic_formation) that [outcrop](/source/outcrop)s in the [Argentine](/source/Argentina) [Patagonia](/source/Patagonia)n provinces of [Río Negro](/source/R%C3%ADo_Negro_Province) and [Neuquén](/source/Neuqu%C3%A9n_Province). It is the younger of two formations belonging to the [Río Neuquén Subgroup](/source/R%C3%ADo_Neuqu%C3%A9n_Subgroup) within the [Neuquén Group](/source/Neuqu%C3%A9n_Group) of the [Neuquén Basin](/source/Neuqu%C3%A9n_Basin), with the oldest rocks dating from the late [Coniacian](/source/Coniacian) and its youngest maybe from the very start of the [Santonian](/source/Santonian). Formerly, that subgroup was treated as a formation, and the Plottier Formation was known as the '''Plottier Member'''.<ref name="Sanchez etal 2006">Sánchez ''et al.'', 2006</ref>

== Description ==
A section near the [Neuquén City](/source/Neuqu%C3%A9n) [airport](/source/airport), north of the town of [Plottier](/source/Plottier), is the type locality of the Plottier Formation.<ref>Fossa Mancini ''et al.'', 1938</ref> At its base, this formation grades into the [Portezuelo Formation](/source/Portezuelo_Formation), and it is in turn overlain [conformably](/source/unconformity) by the [Bajo de la Carpa Formation](/source/Bajo_de_la_Carpa_Formation), a unit of the Río Colorado Subgroup.

The Plottier Formation is the thinnest formation within the Neuquén Group, with a maximum thickness of only {{convert|25|m|ft}}. It is differentiated from the underlying [Portezuelo Formation](/source/Portezuelo_Formation) primarily by its higher content of [argillite](/source/argillite)s (mud deposits) and was deposited under [fluvial](/source/fluvial) conditions. In 2006, a detailed [lithostratigraphic](/source/Lithostratigraphy) and [paleoecological](/source/paleoecology) study of a section of the Plottier Formation was published. This section contained [alluvial](/source/alluvial) deposits laid down by what was essentially a low-gradient [wandering river](/source/Channel_types) throughout the [millions of years](/source/mya_(unit)), but often was of a single-channel type with little [meander](/source/meander)ing.<ref name="Leanza etal 2004">Leanza ''et al.'', 2004</ref><ref name="Sanchez etal 2006" />
