'''Plawangan''' is a hill above the town of [Kaliurang](/source/Kaliurang), on the southern slopes of [Gunung Merapi](/source/Gunung_Merapi), in [Sleman Regency](/source/Sleman_Regency), [Special Region of Yogyakarta](/source/Special_Region_of_Yogyakarta), [Indonesia](/source/Indonesia). It is east of [Turgo](/source/Turgo), which is another named hill above Kaliurang.

Formerly a vulcanological post of the [Indonesian](/source/Volcanological_Survey_of_Indonesia) [volcanology](/source/volcanology) service, it was abandoned in the 1990s following serious southerly [nuee ardente](/source/nuee_ardente) and gas clouds in the vicinity.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article130539782 |title=International Java eruption kills 31 |newspaper=[The Canberra Times](/source/The_Canberra_Times) |volume=70 |issue=21,770 |location=Australian Capital Territory, Australia |date=24 November 1994 |accessdate=28 June 2023 |page=9 |via=National Library of Australia}}</ref>
Under its western side are large man-made caves and tunnels, said by locals to have been made under the orders of [Japan](/source/Japan)ese military administrators during [World War II](/source/World_War_II).
It is also located within the '''Plawangan Turgo nature reserve''' an almost 200 hectares on the slope of Merapi that has rare animals and plants occurring in its area.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.ecologyasia.com/news-archives/2002/may-02/thejakartapost.com_20020528.Q03.htm |title=The Plawangan Turgo nature reserve |access-date=2008-03-09 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120207135003/http://www.ecologyasia.com/news-archives/2002/may-02/thejakartapost.com_20020528.Q03.htm |archive-date=2012-02-07 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
