A '''planetary flyby''' is the act of sending a [space probe](/source/space_probe) past a [planet](/source/planet) or a [dwarf planet](/source/dwarf_planet) close enough to record scientific data.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/flyby|title=Flyby &#124; Define Flyby at Dictionary.com|accessdate=2015-07-15}}</ref> This is a subset of the overall concept of a [flyby](/source/Flyby_(spaceflight)) in spaceflight.

Planetary flybys are commonly used as [gravity assist](/source/gravity_assist) maneuvers to "slingshot" a space probe toward its primary target without expending fuel, but in some cases (such as with [New Horizons](/source/New_Horizons)), flybys are the primary objectives of a mission in of themselves. A relatively recent example of a flyby spacecraft is ''[New Horizons](/source/New_Horizons),'' which performed flyby maneuvers of [Jupiter](/source/Jupiter), [Pluto](/source/Pluto) and [its moons](/source/Moons_of_Pluto) in the 21st century.
