# Place Castellane

The '''Place Castellane''' is a historic square in the [6th arrondissement](/source/6th_arrondissement_of_Marseille) of [Marseille](/source/Marseille), [Bouches-du-Rhône](/source/Bouches-du-Rh%C3%B4ne), [France](/source/France). It was built in 1774.

==History==
The square was named for [Henri-César de Castellane-Majastre](/source/Henri-C%C3%A9sar_de_Castellane-Majastre), an aristocrat who donated the land for its construction in 1774.<ref name="visitorplace">{{cite web|title=Place Castellane|url=http://www.marseilletourisme.fr/les-monuments/place-castellane/|website=Marseille Visitor Centre|accessdate=July 21, 2016}}</ref> A fountain with an [obelisk](/source/obelisk) used as a [lavoir](/source/lavoir) was built in the middle of the square in 1798.<ref name="visitorplace"/>

In 1911, the obelisk was relocated to [Mazargues](/source/Mazargues).<ref name="visitorplace"/> Meanwhile, [Jules Cantini](/source/Jules_Cantini) donated a new fountain, which was designed by sculptor [André-Joseph Allar](/source/Andr%C3%A9-Joseph_Allar).<ref name="visitorplace"/><ref name="acenturyofpictures">{{cite book|last1=Detaille|first1=Gérard|title=Marseille: A Century of Pictures|date=2000|publisher=Editions Parenthèses|location=Marseille|isbn=9782863640944|oclc=41506621|page=xcviii|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=SD-YUJbUzogC&dq=%22Jules+Cantini%22&pg=PR98}}</ref> The fountain, completed in 1913, represents three [Provençal](/source/Provence) rivers: the [Durance](/source/Durance), the [Gardon](/source/Gardon), and the [Rhône](/source/Rh%C3%B4ne).<ref name="visitorplace"/>
